Eddie Evans: Race Car Enthusiast

Eddie Evans, July 18, 1931-April 4, 2006, may have been one of America's leading race car enthusiast. Growing up in Lawrence county, Eddie always had a passion for cars since an early age. He went to his first Indy 500 race the same year graduating from Bedford High School in 1950. That one race was all it took to begin Eddie's passion for collecting race cars. Eddie went on from High School to join the US Navy. Upon returning home Eddie founded the Architectural Stone Sales. The company was very successful and prosperous due to Eddie's hard work and dedication.
Throughout his endeavors as a businessman, Eddie pursued his passion in race cars during his adult life. Eddie has only missed two Indy 500 races in 1952 and 1954. Eddie bought his first race car in 1958 being an antique Sprint car. Some of Eddie's collection includes over twenty-five Indy 500 race cars, eight pedal cars, nine sprint cars, eight midget cars, three go-carts, a 1936 Rolls Royce and 1926 Lincoln Limousine, a 1918 Oldsmobile Touring, five Ford Model Ts, and five Plymouth Super Birds.
A favorite purchase made by Eddie would be the Roger Penske Pennzoil No. 5. The Pennzoil was actually driven by two four time Indy 500 winners: Rick Mears and Al Unser Jr.. Other cars in Eddie's collection are a 1977 Gurney Eagle driven by Bobby Unser, a 1983 March Cosworth driven by Kevin Colgan, a 1985 A.J. Foyt car driven by Dick Simon, and the “Lightening” driven by Pancho Carter and Bill Vukovich Jr.. Another of Eddie's preferred cars would have been the Miller Ford No. 42. The Miller Ford is a two man race car that was driven in the Indy 500 having Johnny Semour as the driver and mechanic Tony Kennington at his side. It is one out of four Ford cars that qualified for the 1935 race coming in with a top speed of 112.696 mph. After all of these years the Miller Ford has only 416 miles on it.
Once Eddie retired he founded the Antique Auto & Race Car Museum which was originally at the Stone City Mall, Bedford, IN. Eddie not only liked to invest in his collection of cars but he enjoyed working on them and driving them. Restoration would take place with Eddie and long time friend and fellow race car enthusiast Wilbur “Hap” Chastain. Earl Cain from C&C Restoration would also lend a hand in working with the cars. Eddie loved to take his cars out to the tracks at the Winchester Speedway. Classic Car Club, Winchester Old Timer's Club, and V-8 Ford Club are a few clubs that Eddie belonged to. He was a member of the Methodist Church and Englewood Baptist Church. Eddie was a very generous and caring man. Once a homeless stranger entered into Eddie's company asking for money. Without hesitation Eddie handed twenty dollars over to the man.
Throughout Eddie's life he has shown others how hard work, passion, and care can better the world. Eddie will always be remembered for his appreciation of race cars, being a hard-working businessman, and his compassion and love for those around him. Eddie's collection of cars will be auctioned at no reserve at Kruse International's Annual Auburn, Spring Auction held in Auburn, Indiana on May 29th through June 1, 2008.
